Game maker: iPod good for video games

Posted by signup

LOS ANGELES, California (Reuters) — Apple Computer Inc.’s iPod has conquered the portable music market, is making inroads in video, and may turn out to be a video game player as well, game maker Electronic Arts Inc. is betting.

Many potential gamers already carry iPods, easily the most popular portable music players sold. Now they can listen to music while also playing EA iPod titles that include “Tetris,” “Mahjong” or “Sudoku.”

“Consumers have an appetite for a diversionary-type game experience — a snack where they can play for five minutes,” Mitch Lasky, who leads EA’s mobile gaming initiatives, told Reuters in a recent interview.

EA, the world’s largest video game maker, and other companies have built a stable of 11 iPod games since September that are available for $4.99 each on Apple’s iTunes online store. Five of the games are from EA.

Lasky joined Redwood City, California-based EA when it bought Jamdat Mobile Inc. for $684 million last year in a bid to boost its status in the mobile market and expand beyond its core console gaming business.

Mobile gaming is growing, and the iPod fits into those plans. “It’s very much a cousin to our existing mobile business,” he said.

Mobile gaming accounted for 14 percent of EA’s revenue in the fiscal year ended March 2006, or $393 million.

Research firm IDC said that U.S. mobile game revenue hit $722 million in 2006.

Lasky declined to reveal iPod-related revenue or unit sales but said “Tetris” remains its top mobile title.

Other available iPod games include include Namco Bandai Holdings Inc.’s arcade classic “Pac-Man” and “Bejeweled,” a popular puzzle game, from Pop Cap Games. Apple itself offers a brick-bashing game called “Vortex” as well the card game “Texas Hold ‘Em.”

The iPod may not be the best device for playing games, but it already is carried around by millions of people, giving it a certain edge, said Forrester analyst Paul Jackson.

It is the one “you are most likely to be carrying when you end up waiting for a flight, sitting in a dentist’s waiting room, etc.,” he said.

The iPod’s weaknesses are similar to those that hobble mobile phones, he added.

For example, the device’s click wheel “keypad” does not provide the same speed and variety delivered by a traditional video game console controller, Jackson said. The iPod’s graphics horsepower also lags that of handheld game machines like Sony Corp.’s PlayStation Portable or Nintendo Co. Ltd.’s DS.

But Apple’s captive audience is accustomed to paying for digital downloads like music and games.

Apple has sold more than 70 million iPods since their introduction in 2001. The iPod commands more than a 70 percent share of the U.S. market for MP3 players, according to NPD.

Apple, which does not break out sales of its individual iPod products, introduced the video iPod in 2005.

Lasky noted that iPods have a consistent design, unlike mobile phones which require game makers to design a unique game for each individual handset model.

Mobile game makers say that one of their biggest challenges is users finding their games on the on-screen menus of mobile phones. These so-called “carrier decks” are often confusing, space constrained and hard to navigate.

Apple has said that consumers have made more than 1.5 billion purchases through its iTunes store, which is well-organized and easy to use.

According to research firm IDC, the audience of mobile game purchasers in the United States will grow more than 16 percent annually to reach nearly 50 million by 2010, substantially increasing total mobile gaming revenue by the end of the decade.

8GB Memstick Pro Duo available next month (February)

Posted by multippt

8GB memstickOften think that your 4GB memory stick still does not provide enough storage for your emulated games legitimate information, this 8GB memory stick sure will!

The memory stick weighs at a light 2 grams, and is of the same size compared to any other Memory Stick Pro Duo. With this much space, you will never have to worry about not having enough space for your 2000 songs (in MP3) collection.

The memory stick can be purchased next month from “Sony Style” (online and retail stores) and authorized dealers. Although the memory stick may be small, it’s pricetag is bound to leave a mark on your wallet (it costs US$300, which is roughly the same cost as a 500GB hard disk).

Note that if you wish to use the 8GB memory stick (or memory sticks with more than 2GB of space) without any problems on your PSP, you may have to update your PSP to the official firmware, 2.70 (that unfortunately means, no homebrew happiness [if you update past 2.80]) (it is not known whether if the custom firmwares [2.71 SE, 3.02 OE and 3.03 OE] fixed the memory stick problem).

Is the console wars over yet?

Posted by multippt

Microsoft have announced that there were 10.4 million Xbox 360 units sold worldwide. This is an amazing feat, considering the fact that the Xbox 360 is the third most popular game console (behind the Wii and the PLAYSTATION 3). Another thing to consider, this was done in a year (okay, maybe it is not really a year, just 13.1 months).

The Nintendo Wii however is still catching up however, and having sold 4 million units during the first 6 weeks, and it’s only a matter of time before it may catch up.

The PS3, almost left alone in the dust, is still putting in its best, having got 1 million units shipped worldwide. Now all it needs to do, is for Sony to ship enough units, and getting the best games out, at the same time keeping the PlayStation fans loyal.

If you ask me, the console wars has not ended yet (though in the past, when a console reachs 10 million units sold, it is considered the winner of the console wars), since the Xbox 360, the Wii, and the PS3 has an equal chance at succeeding (though the Xbox 360 is the first of the new generation consoles to come out).

Mini projector (by Microvision) for portables

Posted by multippt

Mini Projector Prototype Ever thought of the day when mobile phones become so advanced that you can beam a live video on to a wall? Well, this futuristic thought may finally become reality, as Microvision has just announced its release of their very own miniature digital projector. This device is so small that it can be attached to any sort of portable device.

Though, don’t expect to see this sort of thing on sale yet (since there is only a prototype), however, you may get a chance to see this on this week’s CES (Consumer Electronics Show) in Las Vegas.

When the time comes, that small mobile phone screen won’t be small anymore…

1TB hard disks now a reality

Posted by multippt

Hard DiskHitachi has met the ever-increasing hunger of disk space (probably for storing you-know-what), this time by releasing a 1TB (1000GB) drive (a.k.a, the Deskstar 7K1000). This is a feat, considering that Hitachi is the first company to release a hard drive that breaks the 1TB drive.

Now for the technical details. The hard disk consist of five 200GB platters spinning at 7200RPM, and uses perpendicular recording to achieve the 1TB of space.

In the meantime, Hitachi is working on another 1TB hard drive (CinemaStar 7K1000), that is optimised for home digital entertainment.

This hard drive costs an affordable US$400, and is available as a SATA II or PATA 133 drive. It is also only available as an 3.5″ drive (2.5″ 1TB hard disks are still not available, so don’t bother thinking of using it in your PS3 either). (On a side note, please resist the urge to get this drive, because if it fails…)

Dark_Alex Magic - PSP custom firmware 3.03 OE-A’ (REV 2) released

Posted by multippt

Custom FirmwareDark_Alex has once again done his magic once more (again, but in a good way). Just after days of releasing his custom firmware 3.03 OE-A, he just released 3.03 OE-A’. This firmware can be installed via 3.03 OE-A.

In case you have not tried updating any custom firmwares (like 2.71 SE-A) before, let us go through the steps for doing so:
1)Put the oe_a2update folders into the appropriate game folder (”PSP/GAME” folder in PSP official firmware 1.50, or usually “PSP/GAME150″ in a PSP custom firmware [like 2.71 SE, 3.02 OE or 3.03 OE])
2)Run the application from the PSP (it MUST be running the custom firmware 3.03 OE-A)
3)The application should update your PSP to custom firmware 3.03 OE-A’

The changes are as followed:
-CPU clock selection for PSP games
-Various fixes for the recovery menu
-Fixes for part of the UMD emulation
