Getting valuable links as a developer

If you happen to be on these jobs and have websites, you have the opportunity to grab some high quality (non no-follow) links the white-hat way.

Designer
Whether you want it or not, managing a site calls for a designer. A designer can be anyone, maybe even you! If you happen to design a pretty nice template, you get free links if you host it on some other places (most notably Wordpress, which can fetch you nice links fair and square, even if your template appears on the last page).

Portfolios are great, because you’ll need them in some places. Most portfolios are in the form of web pages because they are much easier to represent (after all, it is web designing).

Plug-ins
Designing and making plug-ins can be nice, especially when you have the nice feeling of helping someone achieve the same goals as you (sort of). Here’s some great news! Coding plug-ins for popular Content Management Systems may actually be an easy thing as long as you have some pre-requisites, because everything is all there.

Wordpress, yet again, gives the potential for plug-in makers to shine, and of course, get some exposure to the site in terms of links and impressions. These links are not to be reckoned with, because even if your plug-in appears last, it probably fetches a higher quality link than most sites can give. Again, perfectly fair and square.

Programmer
Some people don’t like staring and black, blue, and green text all day, while others like it. The thing is, if you do a good enough job, some people will recognise you. CodeProject, CodePlex and SourceForge for example, allows you to popularize some working projects of your own. Of course, most people know you update your sites faster than you can update the stuff on CodeProject and party, so most won’t mind you adding a link back to your site - provided you point them to a page that is related to the project you are working on.
