Minor downtime at GMail

Posted by multippt

GMail

Looks like Google mail might be offline for a short while, seeing reports that some are unable to access their Google mail accounts while others can. The downtime is temporary and only prevents users from accessing GMail via web interface. Fortunately, the secured E-mail feeds and POP3 access (i.e. the thing used by mail clients) will still continue to work even during the downtime.

There are some ways to gain re-access of your mail box, one of which is to clear the browser cache (because the blank page is cached and shown). You can try to use an E-mail client like Microsoft Outlook as well as POP3 access is still working.

Google’s Christmas present - 6GB email space

Posted by multippt

GMail at 6GB in a few days time

Sounds like the GMail space meter is going extra fast these few days. By Christmas, expect to have 6GB worth of storage for your account, because that’s how fast the space is increasing. Not too bad, considering that Google is now an email service that provides the second largest mail space that is constantly growing (currently topped by Yahoo with its wonderful limitless space). Though, don’t forget that the space is shared in your Google account, so Google documents and bookmarks take up that space as well. 6GB marks yet another milestone for GMail. It is not too long ago that GMail was 3GB, which was in early 2007.

Another thing worth of note is that Google is doing up some doodles for everyone’s pleasure (while Yahoo is doing flash animations).

GMail chat extends to AIM

Posted by multippt

Google has decided to welcome AIM users to chat, by making it compatible with it. So, you can now welcome your AIM/AOL friends for a nice chat online. Of course, any new feature is great, no matter how small. Google even has a nice image to represent it.

Google unleashes group chat in GMail

Posted by multippt

Looks like Google decided to add another new feature to GMail: Group Chat.

Google Chat: Multiple Contacts

This feature is similar to “inviting” friends to join a conversation in Windows Live messenger. You can chat to multiple friends on a single window. Of course, as with GMail, this messenger is available as a web application.

Aside from group chat, Google has solved the demand for emoticons by adding more emoticons (which look really nice).

GMail now >5 GB

Posted by multippt

GMail keeps growing

A few weeks ago, I mentioned that Google mail was going to overtake hotmail in just 2 months time. Well, I was wrong. Google did it way faster, and managed to hit more than 5GB in just less than a month.

Looks like Google may have bought much more server space than before, because the growth rate in GMail space appears to be much more compared to 2 years ago. Well, it is a great feat that Google managed to increase its mail account by 5 times.

Phishing mail, interesting…

Posted by multippt

For some strange reason, I have been getting more phishing emails than in the past. Looks like my personal email address is getting circulated. :p

Well, at least these emails were easy to spot (aside from the fact that I do not have a PayPal nor Egold account). Though, there is something interesting about phishing email: The way how email services like Google and Microsoft (Windows Live Hotmail) handles them.

GMail 2

Posted by multippt

I stumbled upon this post in Digg. I found out that Google actually upgraded my account automatically (how kind! :) ). Though, Google should have explicitly said that I’m using the new version (like what Microsoft did to Windows Live hotmail, whereby the revamp is fantastic).

Here are some nice little features in this new GMail:
-Contacts [just below "trash" tab on the left]: Allows you to… manage contacts
-”Filter messages like these” [available by selecting the message and clicking on "More actions..."]: Similar to filter, Google helps you filter out those selected images.
-”Older version” [option at the top right]: Use it if you want to use the earlier version
-Change in location of “Loading…” message: The pre-loading message is displayed as normal text on the top left, while the actual loading message is displayed in the center. Other messages which are in orange appear to be in a lighter color compared to the earlier version of GMail.

Aside from these, there do not seem to be any other visible changes.

GMail is still in beta ever since it came out 3 years ago.
