Imminent Google backlink update?

Posted by multippt

Looks like Google has some behind-the-scenes action. Check out the ever-so-useful Google Webmasters and you’ll see what I mean. Other than a recent revamp, it looks like Google has some heavy server activity, such that it cannot display external or backlinks. Same goes for internal links. What’s unusual is that only these statistics are affected, while the rest are working fine.

Google’s 9th Birthday

Posted by signup

Google's 9th Birthday : PostItlive Google’s 9th birthday can be as early as tomorrow or we can wait until September 27th to celebrate it. Why can it be on the 7th or the 27th?

Well, although we have documented their birthday to be on both those days:

Last year Google changed their FAQ on When is Google’s birthday? to read:

Google opened its doors in September 1998. The exact date when we celebrate our birthday has moved around over the years, depending on when people feel like having cake. For more on Google’s history: http://www.google.com/corporate/history.html

So the big question is when will Google feel like having a cake?

Cool… Google Webmasters tools makeover

Posted by multippt

Looks like Google decided to reorganise its webmasters tools page. The end result? A nicer looking assortment of tools, containing some tools that were probably overlooked by many.

Of course, its just a small change. But since Google is a big company, all small changes become noticed.

Google updates homepage

Google homepage

Google has done up a nice little update to it’s homepage. It now sports a more organised user interface, using the navigation bar as an element in it’s web site to make other services available.

Though it is quite a small update, millions of people would probably notice it. After all, Google is one of the larger sites out there.

Google pagerank on toolbar updates again

Posted by multippt

Check Page Ranking
Yay! Google has updated it’s toolbar pageranks once again. What’s the changes? Your site may have either a higher or lower pagerank, or maybe the pagerank may remain the same afterall.

Here’s a small tidbit: Ever since we said Yahoo had a 9/10 for pagerank, guess what? Yahoo now has the full green bar - that is 10/10.

Update: Yahoo lost its full green bar. Wonder what’s Google up to.

Pagerank 10 sites you probably have not visited before - UPDATE

Posted by multippt

I’m sure you have heard about Google pagerank. I’m sure most people have a tough time even struggling past 4. But, if it’s so hard to get a pagerank of more than 4, what about 10? I guess you have known about a few well-known pagerank-10 sites like the official Microsoft site and Google. How about the other lesser-known varieties?

I guess you’ve never bothered visited these pagerank 10 sites before:
-Energy.gov (43000+ backlinks)
-Keio University [Japan] (4000+ backlinks)
-Ercim (1500+ backlinks)
-MIT labs for Computer Science (4200+ backlinks)

Pagerank 10 sites you may have heard of, or maybe visited it:
-The white house [US] (67800+ backlinks)
-IBM (61700+ backlinks) [*]
-Cisco (21700+ backlinks) [*]
-Statcounter (1330000+ backlinks) [*] [The large amount of backlinks could be coming from the stat counter it provides]
-Real Media (130000+ backlinks) [The place where you download RealPlayer]
-Apache Software Foundation (51400+ backlinks) [*]
-National Science Foundation [US] (27100+ backlinks)
-W3 (166000+ backlinks)
-Macromedia (31600+ backlinks)
-NASA (64400+ backlinks)
-Download.com (816000+ backlinks) [*]

Pagerank 10 Sites that are known by many:
-Google [The one who created Google pagerank] (claims to have 3800000+ backlinks) [pagerank might actually be spoofed, some users have noticed that Google had a dissapointing pagerank of 8]
-Microsoft (88300+ backlinks)
-Apple computers (74400+ backlinks)
-Adobe (82600+ backlinks) [*]
-Yahoo (1780000+) [new addition to the pagerank 10 family]

Hmm, where’s Yahoo in the pagerank 10 list? Though Yahoo may be the top site in the world as stated by Alexa, and having a large amount of backlinks (1780000+), it seems to have a pagerank of 9…

Hmm, another site worth mentioning is MSN search by Microsoft. It once had a pagerank of 0 a few days ago [hmm, maybe the site change resulted in a pagerank reset]. The recent pagerank update gave it a 8/10.

[*] - no longer in pagerank 10 “club” after Google pagerank update on 28 April, that is their pagerank value fell.

Edit: The recent pagerank update requires me to edit this post :P
Update: Arg… the September update practically made this list completely outdated. Well, at least it serves as good historical record.

Google acquires Doubleclick at billions

Posted by multippt

Google has recently announced that it would acquire the ad publishing company, DoubleClick at US$3.1 billion in cash (compared to YouTube, that is acquired at US$1.5 billion).

This high price could be due to competition from Microsoft, particularly because Microsoft is also interested in DoubleClick, even participating in a bidding war with Google for the company.

If Google acquires DoubleClick, it would gain access to it’s advertising software, network, and customers (and thus putting a mark in the advertising industry). DoubleClick’s revenues are at US$300 million a year.
