PS3’s U.S. sales double after price cut

Posted by signup

U.S. sales of Sony’s PlayStation 3 more than doubled in the weeks following a price cut and the launch of a lower-priced version, the company said Friday. Sony said it sold about 75,000 PS3 consoles in the week of October 29 in the United States, and more than 100,000 in the following week, compared with weekly sales of 30,000 to 40,000 before.

Sony cut the U.S. price of its PS3 with an 80GB hard drive by 17 percent to $499 in mid-October. It started selling a new model with a 40GB hard drive on November 2 for $399 in an effort to ignite demand ahead of the crucial holiday-shopping season.

Sony, locked in battle with Microsoft and Nintendo in the global video game market, suffered a slow start for the PS3 after its launch a year ago because of high prices and a scarcity of strong game titles.

Nintendo sold 519,000 units of the Wii in the United States in October, while Microsoft sold 366,000 Xbox 360 consoles and Sony sold 121,000 of its PS3 machines, data from market researcher NPD released Thursday.

Apple places new limits on iPhone sales

Posted by signup

Apple last week stopped accepting cash for iPhone purchases and reinstated a two-per-person sales limit in an effort to curb the black market for unlocked versions of the touch-screen handset.

The new policy began Thursday, Apple spokeswoman Natalie Kerris told the Associated Press. Before then, there was no cash restriction and the purchase limit was five per person. “Customer response to the iPhone has been off the charts, and limiting iPhone sales to two per customer helps us ensure that there are enough iPhones for people who are shopping for themselves or buying a gift,” Kerris said. “We’re requiring a credit or debit card for payment to discourage unauthorized resellers.” Since introducing iPhone on June 29th, Apple has sold over 1.4 million of the handsets, the company announced as part of its fiscal fourth quarter earnings last week. However, it estimated that approximately 250,000 of those iPhones were sold to buyers who intended to unlock them and then resell them for use on wireless networks other than AT&T. The new sales restrictions are the latest moves by Apple in its game of cat and mouse with iPhone hackers. Last month, it released iPhone software update 1.1.1, which rendered unlocked iPhones effectively useless.

Digg clone: Pligg goes on sale

Posted by multippt

In a bizarre twist of fate, Pligg [one of the more well known Digg clones] gets landed on the auction table - not by force, but due to the difficulty of maintaining it financially. The winning bidder would gain access to the CMS, its distribution, and the community - quite a nice bargain isn’t it, considering Pligg has a community of over 10000 members (that are registered), with 60000 downloads. It is hoped that the new owner would help bring Pligg to greater heights.

Fortunately, the change in hands of Pligg development would not occur so soon - it may take months. For now, Pligg would be still under the hands of its original owners, until next time.

*Hmm, what ever happened to supergu?
