Old site news: Digg unbanned us

Posted by multippt

Hmm… looks like we forgot to re-edit our previous post saying Digg banned us. It appears Digg has unbanned the domain “110mb”.

This message was delayed due to several unprecedented situations, such that we forgot all about it until now.

Digg banned 110mb.com…

Posted by multippt

Yet another flurry of disasters - Digg has just banned 110mb, for an unknown TOS violation. The bannage began a few days ago, rendering most user’s “Digg This” links invalid (that’s why we removed the “Digg This” links from our main page) (:().

110mb is a public (free) web hosting company, that hosts numerous sites.

Digg’s banning system works this way - Users on Digg can choose to “report” sites [by burying it as spam]. Naturally, once enough reports were made, the site would be banned, for an undetermined amount of time. It’s unknown what causes the TOS violation, but the latest [2] Digg posts that is related to 110mb.com [in terms of URL], is our site!!! Gee… I hope our site didn’t do anything to enrage Digg users [they will not hesitate to put you out of the picture if they just don't like you].

Fortunately, I didn’t see any signs of burying happening with any post related to 110mb, but, it might be behind-the-scenes [users can just send an email to a Digg email address to ban a particular site].

Digg operates a unique community based system, which one must learn it’s traits, in order to avoid trouble from Digg. Unfortunately, it’s kind of difficult to master all that, but it is a hidden mandetory requirement if you want to enjoy Digg.

Digg bans sites on a sub-domain basis [I guess, but, it's possible they might ban the whole domain].

I’ve just asked Digg about it, and currently am waiting for an answer from them.

Permalink trouble…

Posted by multippt

Lately, we have to alter our permalinks back to the original set of permalinks [from /news/... to /?p=...]. I know, it looks ugly, but I guess our host pretty much disallows “.htaccess” files on their server, so our nice permalinks are reverted to the not so nice ones. In addition to that, it generated so many 404s that people even wondered whether our site was fake or not. If you are reading this, obviously the site is real right?

I guess the permalink change did more damage than I thought… there were some popular blogs that linked to us, but they used the previous incompatible permalinks, thus visitors reaching to us from there will get to nowhere. Secondly, I’m not sure why Digg banned us :(… [hey, how could you... we DID read the TOS, and followed them], but it could be due to the 404s the permalink change generated.

So far, I’ve tried contacting the host this site is hosted under [110mb, as the URL implies], and try to get to an understanding, but of course, they haven’t replied yet [they are busy with server stuff]. I’ve tried contacting Digg, but maybe the email was very unclear, and probably I sent it to the wrong department. Oh no, the problems didn’t stop there, Google indexed the previous permalinks and thus generated so much crawl errors that I hope Google won’t think the site is non-existant.

If the permalink structure caused so much problems, we apologize. We were trying to fulfill the TOS [though it neer said anything much], but didn’t foresee the disasters.

We might be shifting host soon [and URLs], but don’t worry, this site won’t be demolished yet, it will act as a bridge to the new site.
