Patch Tuesday: Windows Vista 0-day exploit fixed

Posted by multippt

Looks like Windows Vista has a few loopholes of it’s own.

Some of these fixes involves Microsoft Agent, the successor to “Clippy” (the sometimes annoying paperclip), the Client/Server Run-time Subsystem, and some other vulnerabilities.

Microsoft has tagged the update as “important” (one level lower than “critical”).

PSP 3.30 OE-A delayed, because…

Posted by multippt

Dark_Alex has delayed his awaited update in his arsenal of custom firmwares - 3.30 OE-A. Unfortunately… he won’t be it releasing anytime soon, as he had just bricked his PSP (meaning, his PSP is now a paperweight).

Even though he just toasted (methaphorically) his PSP, Dark_Alex is happy to announce that he would be working on the custom firmware (once he get a new PSP, which would be soon).

PSP firmware 2.80 dumper (+ decryption) with kernal access

Posted by multippt

Kid101Skater from DeviantPSP recently developed a PSP homebrew application that dumps and decrypts the firmware installed on a PSP at firmware 2.80. In other words, full kernal access is effected by this application. Homebrew developers can use the decrypted dump and see how does things work on firmware 2.80 on a PSP. In other words, downgrading a PSP with firmware 2.80 is going to become a reality! Note that at the moment, there isn’t much you can do with this programme, and is actually a proof of concept of full kernal access on the PSP using firmware 2.80. Nonetheless, this is a major step in homebrew development for the PSP (sorry Sony…).

This homebrew application can be run via a TIFF exploit. Also note that this isn’t an official application from Sony, and that you run this at your own risk.

Custom firmware for PSP - 3.02 OE-A

Posted by multippt

PSP custom firmware 3.02 OE-AA custom (unofficial) firmware have been developed by Dark_Alex, known as 3.02 OE-A. This custom firmware is similar to his other special custom firmware for the PSP, 2.71 SE (special edition), in that it has homebrew support, plus the latest goodies Sony have to offer.

Here’s the changelog (difference from 2.71 SE-C):
-3.02 firmware features* (duh…)
-Homebrew can be run using the 3.02 kernal (though with some limitations)
-Ability to play video UMDs from any region** (eg. Region 1 movie UMDs work on a Region 3 PSP)
-O/X button swapping option**
-WMA enabling option** (without needing to go through EULA…)
-Flash player enabling option** (without connecting online)

*The custom firmware has all features, except for the new languages (korean, Chinese traditional, Chinese simplified), WPA internet encryption, and Locationfree player (removed due to space contraints)
**Accessable from recovery menu (holding R button on the PSP while booting up the PSP)

Note that you won’t be able to normally update your PSP normally (via official updates from Sony) when you update to this custom firmware. You can however downgrade (or in other words, remove the custom firmware modification) to firmware 1.50 to 2.71 via recovery menu on the PSP (accessable by holding the R button while the PSP is starting up). The only way to install this custom firmware is via clean install.

This is not an official firmware update from Sony, so install this at your own risk.

PSP official firmware 3.03 released

Posted by multippt

Sony recently released a new firmware update for PSP users. This update updates the PSP’s firmware to 3.03.

The following feature is added:
-More Playstation titles from the PLAYSTATION Network can be played on the PSP

Note that updating this can render your PSP being unable to run homebrew (non-official) software. This firmware cannot be emulated from a homebrew application.

A PSP firmware update consist of several files within it, of which one of the files is a file with the extension *.PSAR. This special file contains the firmware files, which the update installs into the PSP. This new update features a different *.PSAR file, that consist of a different layout. This results in currently available PSP firmware dumpers being unable to dump the new update for emulation. In addition, the encryption keys for certain important files have been changed, making decrypting the entire firmware update not possible. Thus, emulation of this new firmware is not possible at the moment.
