Gmail glitch causes mass email deletion

Posted by multippt

Google comfirmed on Friday that there were some users of Gmail (Google Mail) who had their email accounts cleaned out (in that all or some Email messages received before the 18th of December were deleted) by a glitch. It is likely that the wipeout is done deliberately. However, it is also possible that the email deletion may have been caused by an accident.

Fortunately, this problem affected a small percentage of Gmail users (0.0003%). In addition, Google is known for its security and reliability in its technologies (like Google search and Google Mail). Google has not released any other information behind the incident.

Widespread internet inavailability in East Asia

Posted by multippt

It looks like the earthquake (a massive 7.1 on the Richter scale) which occurred in Taiwan on the 26th of December, 2006, at 8.26pm seems to have triggered some disturbance in some underground cables. While the earthquake fortunately trigger a tsunami (Thank goodness, we wouldn’t want history to repeat itself again too soon. Its already bad enough that a massive tsunami took place on this day two years ago.), it did some how manage to disrupt the normal bandwidth that the people in East Asia get. During such a moment, the download speeds plummet such that it is a hassle to view a web page.

This situation happens to be the worst technology-related disaster in Asia. The scale of the damage is so large that it damaged six undersea cables, leaving only one to carry the internet flow. Internet accessibility to sites from countries such as the United States is poor, since the cables to the country is severely damaged. The damage also showed the region’s dependence on the telecommunication services for businesses. Fortunately, this incident occurred during the period where business is relatively less active (due to public holidays such as Christmas) compared to the other times of the year.
The undersea cables should be fixed in 2 weeks time (probably by 2007). During this time however, this site would be effected, since the administrators are in the affected area (Singapore, East Asia). So there may not be much content being posted here until the problem eases.

Multiple hosting services unavailable: Coincidence?

Posted by multippt

Its kind of unusual that multiple free hosting services are suddenly unavailable, just because their domains got put into lockdown statuses by their domain registrar.

There are quite a few hosting sites that have suddenly become unavailable:
-110mb.com*
-awardspace.com
-addyour.net
-1111mb.com**
-Alot more…

*The hosting service has unlocked/resolved the domain
**The hosting service decided to park the domain at the moment

Well, all these might have been coincidence, or might have been due to people misusing the hosting services.

Postitlive - Finally Available

Posted by multippt

Whew, after a long delay, eNom finally unlocked the domain. Hopefully such a thing like this wouldn’t happen again.

Of course, during the downtime, I’ve been working on something for this blog, thus was unable to provide much news during this event.

I’m working on:
-Getting a personalized domain for this site (Won’t be soon though)
-Making the admin dashboard more personalized
-Putting a “Jobs” panel in the admin dashboard (I might need moderators, editors, and administrators)
-Putting a “License” tag on every post (To assure users that the content I have is legal)
-Including links to other sister blogs (with the “postilive” name) on this blog
-Increasing the rate of news (currently 0.6 news per day) being placed on the homepage. (Thats why I need that “Jobs” panel)
-Passing XHTML markup validation

Postitlive - Recent Unavailability

Posted by multippt

Earlier, we were unable to access the site, due to our host having a slight problem with the domain. It seems that the domain is locked down by enom due to reports of phishers phishing on our web host.

Don’t worry as always, we will still post up-to-date news in times like this.

What if you leave a xbox 360 near a dog…

Posted by multippt

Who would have known that animals like gaming too… enough to make them chew on bits and pieces of it! Here’s the story:

Ben Ackerman auctioned off a xbox 360 on ebay. Apparently, after the auction, the buyer sent him an email, stating an incident relating to his xbox 360. It seems that the UPS delivery man (oh dear… bad publicity for UPS) left the package (containing the xbox 360) in the buyer’s back porch, where the seller’s dog suddenly start attacking the contents in that box.

The damage? Well, miraculously the xbox 360 survived the ordeal… without a single scratch! Unfortunately, the rest of the contents are not spared. The power brick sustained damage at the cable, and definitely needs replacing. The wireless controller has a chuck of it ripped off froom the main body (where the left trigger button used to reside). The wired controller only had slight damage to the cable. The dog also have an apetite for nice looking video game boxes (if you’re wondering, the game box which suffered the most damage was “Call of Duty 2″. Wow, the dog have good taste!). Fortunately, the game discs were spared from any damage.

Well, the seller has the UPS insurence, the buyer gets paid for (by the seller during the auction) and managed to improvise ways to substitute for broken parts.

James Kim (CNET) family found, however…

Posted by multippt

Earlier, we have reported that James Kim and his family was missing after apparently caught in a severe storm. James Kim’s family have been found a few days ago, in a remote area of southern Oregon. However, James Kim was not with the main group. He left his wife and children in search for help but did not return back. James Kim was found later (several more days later actually) by rescuers. They used certain technologies ranging from thermal imaging down to traking via cellphone signal. However, by the time he was rescued, it was already too late.

The delay in rescue was due to the poor weather conditions, and the relative inaccessability of the area. His body was found within a mile of the family’s wagon which was stuck in the snow. The likely cause of Jamess Kim’s death was due to hypothermia.

James Kim’s body was found 11 days after the family was reported missing.
