Where Linux fails

Posted by multippt

Linux is touted as a possible replacement for Windows. However, with every great thing comes great flaws.

Finding software for Linux can be as difficult as finding a needle in the haystack. Most software on the market are “built for Windows”, probably hampering the adoption of Linux. While Linux recognises Windows executables, Linux cannot run them without an emulator. However, there are some software that can run on Linux without any emulators, like OpenOffice and Adobe software.

Free is certainly great. While this is the main feature of Linux, free does come at a cost. While implementing Linux features, user friendliness was compromised. Tell a person who have no knowledge of computers to use Linux, and you may get unexpected results. Linux is built for those who read manuals, unlike Windows which is built for those who want to get on with it in a hurry. Sure, there is Ubuntu, but Ubuntu isn’t as user-friendly as Windows XP (and can’t be compared to Windows Vista).

Talk about command prompt. Windows users never get to touch that black window until they feel veteran enough. Linux has this great feature as well (a.k.a. command line), though, it is a must for most users to know it while installing some software. In fact, some Linux users may even memorize some commands.

Linux is highly secure, probably may more secure than Windows. However, high security does not mean it is immune. Linux does not support most Anti-Virus softwares, so protection in Linux if a virus does get in is lax. Of course, that is if a virus does manage to penetrate the tough shell of Linux.

Well, that’s some main flaws in Linux, but unlike Windows, open source patch up its quirks quickly.

Having fun with MSN: Talk to a person using multiple windows at once

Posted by multippt

Well, Microsoft certainly left some micro loop-holes in its relatively popular Windows Live Messenger. Exclusive to MSN 7 and above, this “glitch” allows you to chat to one user using multiple windows. Simply for fun, and has little practical use.

MSN-Multiple conversations for one (sorry, no thumbnail… yet)

Note: The image isn’t photoshopped. I’m a web developer. What else can I use photoshop for? ;)

Bill Gates no longer World’s richest person

Posted by multippt

For several years, William (Bill) Gates [a.k.a. Bill Gates] stood at the top, unwavered by competition below him. Now, all that has changed. With Bill Gates battling out with his long-term rivals, Carlos and Warren, the top is not Bill Gates, but rather a person whom few knew about him. No, not from America, he is from India.

Mukesh Ambani, now the world’s richest person at $63.2 billion, is one who shall represent India’s growing importance as a hub. Being the first from India to hit the list (and of course, being at the very top) earned him reputation and pride for his country. Strong stock growth aided his rise to the top, allowing him to jump more than 10 places ahead (he was at 14 on March 2007).

Though, Forbes isn’t really saying much about it, and its current lists (at March 2007) showed Bill Gates still being at the top.

Data via StockMarketsView

1) Mukesh Ambani ($63.2 bil)
2) Carlos Slim Helu ($62.3 bil)
3) William (Bill) Gates ($62.3 bil)
4) Warren Buffett ($55.9 bil)
5) Lakshmi Mittal ($50.9 bil)

Enhanced security by simple change in template?

Posted by multippt

Tevine had over 40 newly registered users since its opening. Of course, we welcome these new registered users.

Of course, there is a chance that majority of them are probably “bots” (some with pretty obvious fake names and email), and surely bots are there to… spam.

Though, Tevine has not seen any increase (or any) spam comments despite the large amount of seemingly automated registrations. This could be that the comments form had been modified, pretty much making it slightly different from other WordPress site installs. We would however, be enhancing security by implementing a capcha system for new user signups.

Nonetheless, we would like to welcome genuine sign-ups to Tevine.

The oddities: The firestorm in california

Posted by multippt

Who know’s when will this ever end. Well, this fire may have broken record books, but it certainly exhibits some unusual characteristics that definately cast it apart from other past firestorms:

1) It destroyed 1/10 as much forest area as how much USA clears land in a year.
2) But generated more smoke compared to several coal factories.
3) It’s trail of destruction is almost unpredictable. This fire literally does hit-and-run, leaving some buildings completely untouched, while burning the rest.
4) The fire nicely stops slightly past the Mexico border. Looks like it respects international borders.
5) It required the evacuation of 4 times as much people compared to hurricane Katrina.
6) Evacuation centers are also being evacuated as well.
7) NASA is busy taking photos of the incident upon request, making it one of the most documented firestorms seen from space.
8) Some fires were caused deliberately, some fires were started on accident, combined they do disasterous damage. The ()dry and hot) weather does not seem to help the firemen.

Well, let’s hope that the property toll would be kept low, and that the fire may end soon.
